Opened on September 1979, Big Thunder
Railroad took its first wild ride in Disneyland. Located
at the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, it is a relatively
tame coaster in the form of a runaway mine train that
takes guests through a western journey, reminiscent

Being one of Disney’s top attractions,
waiting in line isn’t a pain because the waiting
area is designed as a part of the station where the
can see the geysers as they move through the queue.
The six trains are made up of five
cars pulled by a single engine. The train runs 36mph
at its fastest. The amazing soundtrack complements the
mild roller coaster element of the ride. Old west songs
that are played on the background are Blue Tail Fly,
Oh My Darling Clementine and Big Rock Candy Mountain.

Upon boarding the train, a safety spiel can
be heard. Those who have visited the American Adventure in
World Showcase would know that the voice belongs to Dallas
McKennon, who also provides the voice of Benjamin Franklin.
The ride lasts about four minutes where guests
experience turns and dips in caves where there are bats, mining
equipment, falling rocks, dripping water and a miner barrel.
Entering the caves is a bit of a thrill because riders get
a feeling of hitting their heads. A seat in the front car
is perfect to enjoy the scenery but to really get a taste
of a wild ride, a seat in the back rows is suggested. Do you

Big Thunder Mountain gives off a kind of glow and seems a
little faster.
Unlike Splash Mountains, there’s no
serious drop in this ride but there are three good drops that
can put some air between the guests seat. The main butte is
about 100 feet above the ground and 197.6 feet above sea level.
This allows guests to have a spectacular view of the fireworks
display in the kingdom at night.
Children below 40” are not allowed
to take the ride so parents who have little tykes with must
have someone to watch over them if they want to experience
